While purchasing crystal, the buyer should check the lead content of the crystal. Full lead crystal is heavier, has a better shine, but is more expensive. There should be no scratches and the edges should not be chipped as it detracts from the value. For expensive crystal pieces the label should be retained. Since crystal is softer than glass, it is more likely that fine scratches are formed on the surfaces. By taking certain precautions, this can be prevented.

Some of the guidelines for taking care of crystal are:
1. Do not expose the crystal to boiling water or freezing ice, let it warm up gradually.
2. Handle each crystal piece individually, do not let it hit other pieces.
3. Do not tap the crystal with silverware.
4. Do not wash in a dishwasher.
5. Do not use a damp cloth for drying.
