Crystal and cut glass figurines, glasses and other gifts are popular in most parts of the world. While cut glass was available for thousands of centuries, lead crystal has been available only since the seventeenth century. Crystal contains lead oxide which increases the weight and is brighter in appearance. Most crystal sold today is cut crystal which improves the refractive index and disperses light, so that the crystal objects shine like diamonds.
Glass is made from silicates, borates from quartz sand, lime,soda, potash. Crystal is also made from glass, but contains lead oxide. Depending on the amount of lead oxide contained, crystal can be classified as fine crystal or crystalline which contains 6-10% lead oxide, lead crystal which contains 10-24% lead oxide and full lead crystal that contains 24% or more lead. The highest quality crystal is the Swarovski strass which contains 30% lead oxide.
